Hi Paula — Thanks a lot for your reply. Looking forward to tasting and hopefully visiting some vineyards, etc. Thanks for the list of areas to note for wine, too. :) :)

Welcome to wine country Wanda! Nelson, Marlborough, Wairarapa, Hawkes Bay, Queenstown ... Be it Savignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir (my fav!), Cabernet Savignon, Merlot ... you are going to enjoy your tipples here! You can get a great bottle of wine for about $15 - $25, anything above that just means it gets better and better.

Greetings whoever is out there. I just joined the group. I write about culinary travel and will be on the flight and in New Zealand writing stories with a food and wine focus. Great to fine a foodie group that I just joined and now this wine appreciation group. Hope to connect with you and share ideas. I know a bit about California wine and South African wine (I am South African living in the San Francisco Bay Area) and of course have enjoyed New Zealand, Australian and Tasmanian wine. And am open to suggestions and ideas. Giving, receiving, whatever. Thanks!

Tried a 2006 Shiraz-Kangarilla Road from McLaren Vale with a 6 cm thick aged rib eye medium rare over BBQ. Not enough wine to finish the steak. It all was better than good.

Am lucky enough to be in Spain and have been enjoying some very tasty Gallician wines, in preparation for some pilgrimage walking.

HI Paul - I was at the supermarket today and couldn't decide what wine to buy and didn't have time to linger so I didn't buy any - BUT I did wonder as I was driving home if I actually looked hard would a find a good Californian wine on our shelves. This coming weekend I will endeavor to find a reasonably priced Californian wine and report back. However if you have any suggestions that you think may have made their way to our shores let me know. I will not be as dedicated as you as to drive for hours to source any!

Fish and his partner across the street at the sandwich shop own a wine shop where I purchased this and other wines. May be like a little slice of home for you, since it is a bit more on the kiwi type formality than Parisian-but is one of my high points and I rent an apartment in the area.

Great, thanks Paul. Will definitely check out the Fish cafe in Paris, and of course will sample the wonderful whites of the sth. actually i quite like the rose's for the hot afternoons.

Try the full bodied french whites from South of France. I have a precious bottle of Les Tuffeaux MountLouis Sur Loire 2006. I bought this back from Pars along with 2 other similar last November. Had it with diner at a fav place called Fish on the left bank that is owned by a kiwi and only employs kiwi wait staff. These type of South of France Whites will blow you away. They drink more like a california red!

I just have to add a comment as I watch the posts. I am not a wine professional but... I think Southland Pinots cannot be beaten, Marlborough Savvys are amazing and for me.... Hawkes Bay Chardy's are big, buttery and bold. That is not to say that there are not some fantastic Cab's and Merlots.... Just my thoughts. I look forward to having a wine or three with you all.
