Thanks so much, Paula, for that great posting. I remember, now, hearing about the 'hangi' from New Zealand friends in South Africa. There's also a very old tradition there of cooking in the ground in what is probably a similar way. Only saw/tried it once. So grateful you reminded me of this and also, now I remember about pavlova being from New Zealand. All the other things are new (bar the marmite). I will write a list and see what I can tick off. Actually, lots right here from what you tell me to write about. :) :)

Hey Aroha, maybe Air NZ should organise a foodlovers flight next time?? We can all get together over gorgeous food and wine :) hehe, the kiwis can all 'bring a plate' of their fav kiwi dish for the visitors, someone can do a hangi, and get a vineyard on to sponsor. yummmy! sounds like a week long event.

Yum, Paula can you show me around next time I am in Auckland LOL! I don't think you have missed anything :)

Definately a must to try: 'Vogels' original bread, available at all supermarkets. Most kiwis living overseas develop a craving for it, in particular toasted with butter and marmite. Also very good toasted with marmite, avocado and rock salt. We have a wonderful variety of places to eat, from asian foodcourts, to 5 star dining. For those travelling to Rotorua, try a 'hangi' meal at one of the hotels, a hangi being the maori way of cooking meals in the ground over several hours. Other yummy things - a whitebait fritter, pavlova with cream, anzac cookies, afghan cookies, and try a feijoa soda drink! Wanda, I suggest you try going to the Avondale market on the weekend in Auckland, a large polynesian market where you can try all sorts of things.

Greetings, foodies — I just joined your group. I write about culinary travel and will be on the flight and in New Zealand writing stories with a focus on food. I love that I see this group of people having a good time around food. I know what marmite is and vegemite as I'm South Africa (but living in the San Francisco Bay Area). Other than that, would appreciate sharing ideas and suggestions :)

Where can I get some yummy seared Ahi in the South Island? I am to spend most of my trip to NZ there.

Laynie, marmite tends to be a bit sweeter than Vegemite which is quite salty.
Both are dark brown almost black in colour, spreads like smooth peanut butter and can be an aquired tasted, a bit like anchovies. :)

Hey Laynie,
a mouse trap is basically grilled cheese on toast, very nice and with the vegemite or marmite it is very nice, try it ....

I am a marmite fan - you put it on toast or scones (none of that jam and cream stuff) Also good for mousetraps - that is the type you eat not for bait for the poor mice.......
